NEIL BABINS started acting in his late teens and writing even earlier. At the age of 16, he penned his first play, MY FRIEND GALLO, a saga of two families living in post World War 2 Brooklyn. The production was reviewed favorably on Montreal radio. He went on to produce and act in this play as well as four others, three of which he directed. He found his love for the stage while studying at McGill University in Montreal, majoring in Psychology, and participating in their drama program. He took on a full load and took side classes at the National Film Acting School, announcing only weeks later to his mom that he’s found his true love, and medical school would have to wait. It’s still waiting. Neil went on to study acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts – West in Los Angeles, earning an Associates Degree, followed by a year of repertory. He went on to study at the Charles Conrad studio for two years, then worked privately with several coaches, and a year after “frequenting” auditions, he sat down and wrote scripts. Among them, one of a dozen or so plays called “Brother Like Me”, a story of two New York brothers at odds since day one, reunited after a long separation when one of them learns that he is dying. Neil produced and directed this play in the North Hollywood district, and after rewriting it many times, finally gave in to a different passion: writing for the screen.
Several plays, two short films, and half a dozen screenplays followed, and along the way a total of nearly a hundred stage productions as a performer, ranging from Shakespeare to Neil Simon. Neil recently discovered and developed his wit in comedy, inventing characters, doing impressions and getting himself a string of gigs at the Comedy Store in Hollywood. He wrote and performed a benefit show for the victims of the 9-1-1 tragedy at the GIG in Hollywood on Oct 12, 2001.
Neil has written a one hour one man show entitled "UNPLUGGED!" which premiered in January 2002.
